E-Cigarettes… What Are They?
The e-cigarette is actually a very clever little gadget that gives you something to replace “real” cigarettes with. Rather than puffing on the “real” cigarette to get your nicotine fix, you inhale on the vapor cigarette instead, still getting the vital dose of nicotine you truly need to make it through the busy morning ahead of you, but without a lot of the health scares often associated with smoking cigarettes. In theory, it’s a very good plan. In theory, you could wean yourself away from the electric cigarettes, as well as initially replacing the real cigarettes with the electronic ones. To cut a long story short, you could quit smoking entirely… in theory, anyway.
How do electronic cigarettes work?
You have a few different parts to your e-cigarette, depending on the type and electronic cigarette brand you have gone for. There are three main ones, that you can pick from:
The Tank – this is usually a much larger e-cigarette with a bigger battery, and a “cartomizer” or “atomizer” that is filled with e-liquid.
The Imitation – this basically looks like a “real” cigarette — there are two parts to it (or three in some cases), and the cartridge filled with e-liquid or “filter” is screwed onto a long battery with a glowing tip, that imitates the bit of the cigarette that is filled with tobacco. As you can see from the reviews, these tend to be the most popular models as well.
The Disposable - this is the same as the imitation but isn’t recharged. Instead you use it once until the battery runs out and then you can throw it away.
Looking at liquid?
The e-liquid is the part of the e-cigarette that contains the nicotine. You can’t smoke an electronic cigarette at all without this. This e-liquid will come in a variety of strengths, and flavors in some cases, and is what gives you the nicotine hit you desperately need when you inhale on your fake cigarette.
The battery powered device has a clever way of heating up the liquid to a point where sit makes vapor, so you not only inhale to get the rush and throat hit that you would associate with smoking, but also so you get the bit that you blow out as well – the exhale.
As you can imagine, there are a lot of benefits from making the change to an smokeless cigarette. You don’t get the stench of smoke that comes with the bad habit, plus there’s no danger of burning anything down in the process. You won’t have to brave the cold, wind and rain just to get your lunchtime fix, while your non-smoking work colleagues are safely in the warm and dry. You won’t have to stand outside the bar either, enjoying your cigarette with your beer. You won’t have a lot of the associated risks of smoking such as cancer, throat and lung problems, difficulty exercising or becoming short of breath whilst climbing the stairs. You aren’t inhaling the nasty chemicals and toxins from the tobacco either.
A lot of e-cigarette users, especially those I’ve spoken to, have said that there were a few MASSIVE benefits that they found within just a few short weeks of using the gadget. Firstly, an improved sense of smell meant that food tasted and smelt truly delicious. At the same time, a dirty diaper was definitely more potent than usual. Secondly, improved sleep patterns seem to be a bonus that pops up more often than you’d be lead to believe, and you can say goodbye to that gruesome-sounding “smokers cough” too…
Almost seems to good to be true, doesn’t it?
How do you quit smoking with e-cigarettes?
Now we come to the real heart of the matter. Can you really quit smoking entirely by making the change to electronic cigs? Is it really as simple as everyone is making it out to be?
As an avid e-cig smoker for about 5 or so years now, I have tried more e-cigarette brands than I can shake a stick at. I’ve loved some and hated some, I’ve lost some and broken some, I’ve become attached to a few of them, and doe of them didn’t even turn up at all…
I have successfully quit smoking for a whole two years. Then six months. Then a few months and weeks here and there I started smoking again, obviously, but am in the process of quitting again. I am a true example of how e-cigarettes CAN help you to quit smoking, but without will power, you will still be pretty useless at it. If I can do it; a 25-a-day smoker for about 15 years, you can definitely do it!
The way to quit is fairly simple – you simply wean yourself down the tobacco strength chain.
You start with high nicotine, move down to medium nicotine, then to low nicotine and, eventually, you are on zero nicotine and theoretically, you aren’t addicted to nicotine anymore. It really is as simple as that. Obviously you do this over time; it’s not something that will happen overnight. I shall delve a little deeper into time frames at a later date with you. I’ve tried a couple of different methods and time periods, and some definitely had better luck than others.
There are a whole bunch of ecig brands and companies making these smart devices now, and it can be hard to know where to start. There’s the imitation ones, the disposable ones and even the tank style ones that you will need to take into consideration, plus a million and one (almost) places that you can buy e-liquid from. That’s before you even get into the debate of whether or not you should refill your cartridges, or use ready-made ones. Hopefully, I can help you find the truth about the e-cigarette industry, as well as answering all of your questions. It won’t all be good, and it probably won’t be pretty, but I am going to give my TRUE and HONEST reviews of the best e-cigarettes… and the worst.
